Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority, has called the US veto of a UN Security Council resolution on an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip “immoral”. They are “responsible for the bloodshed of children, women and the elderly,” the president said.
According to a press release from the presidency, the United States is “partners” with Israel in the “genocide, ethnic cleansing and war crimes” that Abbas says the country is committing in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and Jerusalem.
The US vetoed the UN resolution tabled by the United Arab Emirates. It received 13 votes in favor, one abstention (United Kingdom) and one vote against (United States). According to the US, the call for an immediate ceasefire would “only sow the seeds of a future war, because Hamas has no desire for lasting peace.”
The Palestinian extremist organization Hamas called the US veto “unethical and inhumane”. Hamas carried out a raid on Israel on October 7, causing hundreds of casualties. That was the direct cause of the current war, in which Israel has vowed to eradicate Hamas.
Human Rights Watch’s UN representative, Louis Charbonneau, also responds to the US veto. The US risks being “complicit in war crimes” by continuing to provide Israel with weapons and “diplomatic cover” while the country commits “atrocities” in Gaza, Charbonneau said.
