Israel-Hamas Four-Day Agreement; Shin Bet and Mossad support, what is America’s role?

A month and a half after the start of the Israel-Hamas conflict, there will be a four-day break in the bloodshed, screams and gunfire. Negotiations mediated by Qatar, the US and Egypt led to the vote with the support of Israeli security forces such as the IDF, Shin Bet and Mossad. Both sides have agreed to halt the bloody attacks for the time being, albeit with several conditions.

Shortly after Hamas took hostages, including 240 Israelis, during a deadly Oct. 7 attack in southern Israel, the government of Qatar contacted the White House to begin efforts to secure the release of the hostages. It was reportedly done without telling other relevant US agencies because Qatar and Israel demanded top secrecy.

The decision is as follows

Despite little opposition, the government published a cabinet decision to cease fire until the release of 50 of the approximately 240 hostages abducted to Gaza. In the first phase, Israel will release 150 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the return of 50 hostages to Israel. It will take place in four phases and at least 10 hostages will be released in each phase.

In the second phase, Israel will release an additional 150 Palestinian security prisoners if 50 additional hostages are returned to Israel. The same ratio of Palestinian prisoners to Israeli hostages will continue from the first phase, and at least 10 hostages will be released in each additional phase, it said.

In addition to Israeli citizens, the hostages are from about 40 countries, including the US, Thailand, Britain, France, Argentina, Germany, Chile, Spain and Portugal. The Israeli government said more than half of the hostages were foreign and dual nationals.

“The State of Israel is obliged to return all hostages to the country. As a first step towards this goal, the government allows a temporary ceasefire. According to this, in the first phase, 50 hostages, including women and children, will be released in four days. A temporary ceasefire will be in effect at this point.

Besides these, for every 10 hostages released, the ceasefire will be extended by one day. There will be a 24-hour ceasefire and the release of 10 hostages. Again, in the second phase, the captives are released only if the hostages return to Israel. Following the publication of the prisoners’ names, the Israeli public was given 24 hours to appeal the agreement or the release of particular prisoners to the High Court.

Adolescents and women

The Almagor Terror Attack Victims Association has announced that it will file a petition in the High Court against the government’s agreement to return 50 people held hostage by Hamas in Gaza. At the same time, the vast majority of the 300 prisoners Israel announced it was ready to release were men aged 18 and under. The other 13 prisoners are adult women.
