Israel: Gantz calls on opposition parties to join ‘struggle for state character’

He set up an “action forum” to fight the new government’s plans

Outgoing Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz announced on Sunday the creation of an organization to fight the future government’s political agenda, fearing that the future coalition could undermine the democratic character of the state.

Gantz urged those who oppose the incoming right-wing government to join the new group and fight for the state’s character. He also added that he had invited future presidents of opposition parties to co-create the forum with him.

“I see the emerging reality in coalition agreements in terms of damage to democratic values, and I think it is important to create a forum for action that starts thinking about combined parliamentary, public and media movements,” he wrote.

“We will not remain silent. We will fight together for the character of the state, in education, in the judiciary and in the Israeli military,” Benny Gantz said, posting a registration link to the forum.

The National Unity president’s decision comes after a series of demands from far-right and religious parties that should join Likud in the next government, including the drastic weakening of the independence of the judiciary and an agreement to transfer authority to some content in Israeli schools to MK Avi Maoz.
