Israel said on Thursday that agents from its intelligence service, Mossad, had been active in Iran to arrest a suspected leader of what it said was an Iranian plan to attack Israelis in Cyprus.
A Mossad statement identified the suspect as Yousef Shahbazi Abbasaliou, and said he had “received detailed instructions and weapons from senior (officials) in the Iranian Revolutionary Guards” to carry out such an attack.
The Israeli “I24 News” channel said that the Mossad was able to reach the “killer” in Iran and collected a video testimony from him about how the Revolutionary Guards planned hostilities.
According to the information, the person assigned to the mission made contacts with Iranian, Pakistani and local aides and displaced persons during his stay in Cyprus, where they helped him obtain weapons and means of communication and transport him to the area where the targeted man lives.
The suspect planned to follow the “target” when he left his house and eliminate him in a secluded place at night.
Later, the killer was ordered to get rid of the weapon, which he hid in a remote location in Limassol and then fled to Iran, according to i24 News.
He added, “The Foreign Intelligence Division of the Revolutionary Guards Intelligence Organization – Division 800 – is behind the assassination plan.”
The Mossad stated that the operation was carried out in cooperation with the Cypriot intelligence service and other intelligence agencies.
