Israel finds bird flu in tens of thousands of turkeys

JERUSALEM (ANTARA) – Israel found an outbreak of the H5N1 bird flu that was contagious in more than 62,500 turkeys, the ministry of agriculture and village development said on Tuesday (4/1).

The infected turkeys were found on two farms in the village of Ram On in northern Israel, the ministry said in a statement.

In recent weeks bird flu has spread in dozens of chicken and turkey coops in northern and southern Israel. As a result, the authorities destroyed hundreds of thousands of chickens and there was a shortage of eggs in Israel.

The ministry said that veterinary services, which are currently operating according to emergency procedures, are continuing strict surveillance in a number of areas and isolating outbreak points.

H5N1 bird flu can also infect other animals such as cats, pigs and tigers.

In rare cases bird flu can also infect humans.
