Israel evicts Palestinian family in East Jerusalem

In East Jerusalem, Israel evicted a Palestinian family last night despite international criticism. The case received a lot of attention this week after one of the residents of the house threatened to set himself and the building on fire in protest against the eviction.

According to eyewitnesses, the eviction took place around half past three in the morning, after which the house was demolished. Israel says it wants to build a school on the site of the house. According to the Israeli police, 18 people were arrested during the eviction, among other things for ‘violent entrenchment’ and disturbing public order.

Monday was Israel even planning to vacate the house. At the time, this led to criticism from many European countries, including the Netherlands. The Dutch ambassador in Tel Aviv called the deportation contrary to international law and called on the Israeli authorities to stop the eviction.

Ultimately, the eviction did not go through on Monday.

Israel may also have refrained from doing so because the father of the Palestinian family on the roof of the house threatened to set fire to himself and the building if the police approached.
