Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman Major General Daniel Hagari held a press conference on the afternoon of the 27th local time and said, “Ground forces are expanding operations in the Gaza Strip.”
Major General Hagari also said, “We are strengthening our attacks on the Gaza Strip to a very significant degree,” and “We will continue to attack Gaza City and its surroundings.”
As a result of the expansion of the operation, all communications, including internet and mobile, were cut off throughout the Gaza Strip.
Netblocks, an Internet monitoring company, also stated, “Real-time network data showed that Internet connectivity in this area was cut off.”
Hamas’ position is that it will repel Israel if it invades the Gaza Strip in earnest.
The AFP news agency also reported that a volley of rockets fired by Hamas was captured being launched toward Israel.
Hamas claimed in a statement that “Israel took these measures to commit bloody revenge in the air, on land, and at sea.”
