Tel Aviv –
Military Israel delivered his defense after being bombarded with criticism for his troops’ actions in stripping dozens of men arrested in Gaza Strip. The Israeli military explained that the move was part of a routine search for people suspected of being involved in ‘terrorist activities’.
As reported AFP and Al ArabiyaMonday (11/12/2023), a number of video recordings showing men being stripped of their clothes down to their underwear, with some of them apparently handing over weapons, were broadcast by local Israeli media on Thursday (7/12) last week.
The local Israeli media report called it a moment of surrender by the militants Hamas.
Several video recordings circulating have sparked outrage on social media. Analysis carried out AFP Factcheck shows one of the videos was recorded in the Beit Lahia area, Gaza Strip northern part, although it is difficult to geolocate the exact recording location.
A soldier’s arm is visible in one of the recordings, indicating that the video was recorded by one of the Israeli military personnel. In another video, the location of which could not be confirmed by AFPa group of blindfolded men are seen sitting with their hands tied behind their backs.
Condemnation rained down on Israel over the videos, with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) saying it was concerned by the circulating images and stressing that all detainees must be treated humanely and with dignity.
The Israeli military, in its statement, said its troops often strip people deemed to pose a threat to ensure they are not carrying weapons or explosives.
