JERUSALEM: Israel’s airstrikes in Gaza early on Wednesday continued the previous day’s attacks. In another incident, two Palestinians were killed by gunmen in the occupied West Bank, the Israeli military said. The army said that when they fired at the army, they fired back. 16 people, including three leaders of Islamic Jihad, were killed in the previous day’s airstrike. Most of the dead civilians are women and children.
At the same time, Israeli airstrikes were retaliated by rocket fire from Gaza. About 60 rockets were sent targeting southern Israel. There were no reports of casualties or damage to buildings in the attack. In the wake of the rocket attacks, the Israeli army asked people to stay near bomb shelters. Schools were closed for the second day as a precaution. The army also announced that the underground rocket launch centers of the Islamic Jihad were destroyed in the attack.
Israel said it was trying to avoid a confrontation with Hamas. And the confrontation with Islamic Jihad will continue. However, Hamas has declared solidarity with Islamic Jihad. There are also concerns that if the conflict continues, it could escalate into full-scale war.
