Israel Condemned for Treatment of Palestinian Detainees in Gaza City

Gaza City

Condemnation flows for Israel after a number of videos and photos showed dozens of men Palestine which they caught at Gaza Strip stripped of their clothes and forced to kneel, with some blindfolded and their hands tied behind their backs.

As reported Reuters and Al JazeeraSaturday (9/12/2023), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) stated that it was concerned by the images circulating and emphasized that all detainees must be treated humanely and with dignity.

“We strongly emphasize the importance of treating all detained persons humanely and with dignity, in accordance with international humanitarian law,” Media Relations Advisor for the Middle East, Jessica Moussan, said in a statement.

Head of the Palestine Mission in London, Husam Zomlot, in his comments said the circulating images were reminiscent of “some of the darkest chapters in human history”.

Strong criticism also came from Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, who accused Israel of “barbarity in treating prisoners and innocent citizens”.

Local Israeli television broadcast video footage showing men, said to be members of Hamas, kneeling wearing only their underwear and heads bowed on the streets of Gaza City on Thursday (7/12) local time. Reuters has verified the authenticity of the video.

“We are talking about people arrested in Jabalia and Shejaia (in Gaza City), Hamas’ stronghold and its center of gravity,” said Israeli government spokesman Eylon Levy, when asked about the circulating images.
