The Israeli military said its warplanes bombed dozens of targets of the pro-Iran terrorist group Hezbollah in Lebanon on Monday.
Israeli Air Force planes attacked “dozens of launchers and buildings where weapons were stored in the Bekaa region of Lebanon,” the army said in a statement posted on Telegram.
He specified that the sites were linked to Hezbollah.
Israel “will continue to heavily attack, damage and degrade Hezbollah’s military capabilities and infrastructure in Lebanon,” he added.
Hezbollah began firing rockets at Israel a day after the Oct. 7 attack by its Palestinian ally Hamas, which sparked war in Gaza.
But in recent days, Israel has shifted the focus of its operations from Gaza to Lebanon, where hundreds of people have been killed and more than 200,000 displaced in the last week.
US President Joe Biden signaled Sunday that he would hold talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and believes an all-out war in the Middle East must be avoided. “We have to get this done,” Biden told reporters at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware before boarding Air Force One for Washington.
Meanwhile, smoke was still rising from the rubble of Friday’s attack in which Hassan Nasrallah was killed following an Israeli Intelligence operation. AP journalists saw smoke rising from the rubble as people approached the scene, some to see what was left of their homes and others to pay tribute, pray or simply witness the devastation.
In response to the drastic escalation of Israeli attacks on Lebanon, Hezbollah has intensified its rocket fire toward Israel in the past week, from several dozen to hundreds of projectiles a day, the Israeli military said. The attacks left several people injured and caused some damage, but most of the rockets and drones were intercepted by Israel’s anti-aircraft batteries or fell in unpopulated areas.
The army claims that its attacks have reduced Hezbollah’s capabilities and that “the number of launches would be much greater if it had not carried out its offensive.”
In another development, on Sunday, Israel’s military said dozens of its aircraft hit Houthi targets in Yemen in response to a recent attack on Israel. The army said it attacked factories and port facilities in the city of Hodeida.
The Houthis launched a ballistic missile towards Ben Gurion airport on Saturday as Netanayhu was arriving there. The Houthi press office said the Israeli strikes hit the ports of Hodeida and Rass Issa, along with two thermoelectric plants in Hodeida, a stronghold of the Iranian-backed rebels. The Houthi-run Health Ministry said four people were killed and 40 others wounded in the offensive.
The Houthis said they took preventive measures in anticipation of the attacks, emptying oil tanks at ports, according to Nasruddin Ammer, deputy director of the press office.
