Safieddine is a figure widely seen as a potential new leader of Hezbollah, who will replace the late Nasrallah.

A source close to Hezbollah said the Israeli military had launched 11 consecutive attacks on Hezbollah headquarters in the southern suburbs of Beirut. Several AFP correspondents in the Lebanese capital and surrounding areas heard a series of large explosions.

“Israel attacked the southern suburbs 11 times in a row,” said the source, who declined to be identified.

The Israeli bombardment, according to the source, was so powerful that car alarms went off and buildings shook in and around Beirut.
