Israeli warplanes carried out an attack on the Maghazi refugee camp, located in the center of the Gaza Strip, this Sunday, 5. The attacks resulted in the deaths of at least 45 people and left dozens injured, according to information provided by authorities local health services.
This attack occurred amid an ongoing offensive by Israel to weaken the Hamas terrorist group’s control over the territory. The numbers, released by Hamas itself, cannot be independently verified.
Despite international calls, including from the United States, for a humanitarian pause to bring aid to affected civilians, Israel continued its offensive, claiming that Hamas was facing the full strength of its troops. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant warned that anyone in Gaza City was at risk.
The airstrikes on the Maghazi refugee camp have worsened growing international outrage over the escalation of violence in the region. Tens of thousands of people, in cities such as Washington and Berlin, took to the streets on Saturday, the 4th, to demand an immediate ceasefire.
To date, Gaza’s Health Ministry reports that more than 9,400 Palestinians have died in the territory during nearly a month of fighting, a number that is likely to rise as attacks continue. Local authorities continue to rescue the rubble in search of more victims.
The Israeli military claims to have surrounded the city of Gaza, the initial target of its offensive against Hamas. Israel claims its attacks mainly target Hamas terrorists, while accusing the group of using civilians as human shields.
Critics of the conflict, however, argue that Israeli attacks often result in a high number of civilian casualties, including women and children, and consider the response disproportionate given the critical humanitarian situation in Gaza.
