Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant highlighted the importance of the rescue of two Israeli hostages in Rafah last night as a “turning point” in the war, but warned that the majority of the hostages will be released by agreements and not by military operations.
“There will be more operations,” said Gallant during an event with agents from the elite Yoav police unit, in charge of the rescue of Fernando Simón Marman and Norberto Louis Har. “Hamas is vulnerable. Hamas is penetrable. It is possible to go anywhere and do anything,” she added, as reported by The Times of Israel.
Gallant noted that “there are still hostages and we have to get to them.” “The majority will not come back like this. I hope it is through agreement processes. But who knows how many times (a rescue operation) will be necessary and under what circumstances,” he said.
Since the November truce with the exchange of hostages for prisoners, there have been no new agreements between Israel and Hamas despite international diplomatic efforts.
This same Monday, the Israeli Finance Minister, the far-right Bezalel Smotrich, urged the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, not to go to Cairo to negotiate releases.
“He should not send the head of the Shin Bet, Ronan Bar, to Cairo but to Rafah along with his men and the soldiers of the Israeli Armed Forces to destroy the Nazi Hamas terrorists as he did last night,” he said.
“Instead of sending the head of the Mossad – secret services – to Qatar, I should send him to eliminate the heads of Hamas around the world,” he remarked on X, formerly Twitter.
