Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid on Tuesday announced the appointment of former tourism minister Asaf Zamir as his country’s consul general in New York.
Zamir will have held a vacant position for almost a year, since the end of Dani Dayan’s 5-year term.
The Hebrew website “Walla”, quoting the words of Zamir, 40, reported: “I thank Foreign Minister Lapid for his confidence. Strengthening Israel’s position as well as its relations with the two major American parties ( Democrat and Republican), but still nurturing ties with Jewish communities in the United States, are significant and complex challenges, and I am proud and happy to contribute.
Zamir is a former Minister of Tourism (May 2020 to October 2020). He was deputy mayor of Tel Aviv (center). He grew up in the United States and graduated from Tel Aviv University, where he studied law.
The Consulate General of Israel in New York is the largest diplomatic delegation of the Jewish state in the world.
The Consul General of Israel in New York is primarily responsible for relations with the leaders of major Jewish organizations, as well as contacts between Israel and the states of New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Jersey and Ohio, according to the same source.
