An Israeli hospital on Tuesday (12/21/2021) confirmed the country’s first known death of a patient with the Omicron variant of COVID-19. The patient previously suffered from a number of serious conditions.
Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba said the man, in his sixties, died on Monday, two weeks after he was admitted to the COVID-19 ward.
Quoted from the Channel News Asia page, a hospital statement said the patient was suffering from various serious illnesses.
“The morbidity comes mainly from pre-existing disease and not from respiratory infections arising from the coronavirus,” he said.
The results of the PCR tests carried out raised suspicions that an Omicron variant was detected and was therefore sent for DNA analysis, the statement added.
Israeli media reports from The Times of Israel and Ynet said the patient had received two doses of the vaccine.
Earlier on Tuesday, Israel’s Ministry of Health said there are at least 340 known cases of Omicron in Israel.
The Israeli government approved a 50 percent reduction in office attendance for public sector employees, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s office said, to encourage more remote work (WFH).
Defense Secretary Benny Gantz’s office said he ordered the military’s Home Home Command, tasked with anti-pandemic measures, to prepare for a possible 5,000 new cases per day.
