Israel accuses UNRWA of allowing Hamas to use infrastructure for military operations

Israel accused the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA on Tuesday of allowing the Palestinian militant group Hamas to use its infrastructure in the Gaza Strip for military operations.

“UNRWA is a front for Hamas. It is fundamentally compromised in three main ways: by massively recruiting terrorists, by allowing Hamas to use its infrastructure for military action, and by relying on Hamas to distribute aid to the Gaza Strip,” government spokesman Eilon Levi said in a video statement. .

Levi claimed that 10% of UNRWA workers were members of Hamas or the Islamic Jihad militant group in the Gaza Strip, but provided no evidence.

“It’s not a neutral organization,” Levi said.

Israel has long targeted this UN agency, accusing it of systematically working against Israel’s interests.

Israel announced last week that several UNRWA employees were involved in the brutal attack by “Hamas” on Israel on October 7. Following the allegations, several countries, including the United States, Germany and France, have suspended funding to UNRWA.

Israel has promised to suspend UNRWA’s activities in the Gaza Strip after the war.

The UN coordinator for the Gaza Strip, Zigrid Kaag, announced on Tuesday that UNRWA cannot be replaced by another institution.

“No organization can replace or replace UNRWA’s enormous capacity, structure – its expertise and knowledge of the people in the Gaza Strip,” Kaga said.
