Isle of Armor is an asset

Last weekend I had a great time with Isle of Armor. Not just the latest expansion for Pokémon Sword & Shield, but the first DLC for a Pokémon game ever.

The only question is whether Isle of Armor really adds anything to the regular game. Is it worth the money and do you enjoy it more? In this review I give you the answer to those questions.

Pokémon Sword & Shield: Isle of Armor

First, it is good to clarify what exactly Isle of Armor is for an extension. Indeed, there are those who may expect a whole new storyline. And despite the fact that you do follow a quest, that is all but what it is all about. The expansion seems to be mainly aimed at an island that greatly enlarges the Wild Area from Pokémon Sword & Shield. You not only have extra locations where you can go crazy, but you are also able to add quite a few new Pokémon to your Pokedex.

I go into it a little deeper.

The Isle of Armor story

The story of the Isle of Armor is not very extensive. It serves practically as an introduction to the new Wild Area and can be played out within a few hours. If it is no less. The story is quite simple:

You arrive on the Isle of Armor where you eventually end up in a Dojo. There you are presented with a number of challenges, which you have to endure in order to get a new legendary Pokémon. This is Kubfu, which is practically a combination between a raccoon and a ninja. When you are done with the challenges and the little piece of story that is in the game, you will be released in the Wild Area that you have previously discovered in the story.

Expansion of the Wild Area

The Isle of Armor expansion is simply a new Wild Area for you to discover. It expands the open world that Pokémon Sword & Shield already gave you. And that is something that I am extremely excited about.

I will confess that I went pretty crazy in the standard game and managed to enjoy myself for a few hours after I finished the game. Whether it’s a break from work or at the end of a busy day: just go into the Wild Area, catch Pokémon and join my team here and there. With the arrival of the Isle of Armor, that habit has crept back in. And that’s actually how you should see this expansion: as a new way to pick up the game again and further expand your Pokémon collection.

That is easy to do. Isle of Armor is more than just a new piece of Wild Area. It also brings a load of new Pokémon. Colorful Slowpokes, Sharpedos that chase you like crazy or Scythers that spontaneously emerge from the grass: you can easily catch 100 new Pokémons in the game.

The little extras

There are also quite a few extras in the expansion. For example, it is possible to expand the Dojo when you need it. You get a number of new hairstyles, which you can apply at any time in the hair salon that you have built with Watts in the Dojo. Or it is possible to place a vending machine in the middle of the Dojo so that you never run out of the right items.

There are two towers on the Isle of Armor. One tower is a Water tower and the other a Dark tower. You choose one of the two towers to take on the challenge, with your Korbfu, with other fighters. If you choose the Water Tower, the Dark Tower will close its doors forever and vice versa. It is a nice extra challenge because you can only enter with your Korbfu and it must be at least level 70 to be able to achieve it at all.

There are also 150 Digletts hidden all over the island and you guessed it: you must find it. A nice extra addition to the game, which also comes in the form of Pokémons that are now following you.

Pokémon Sword & Shield: Isle of Armor worth it?

I think it has become clear in the above paragraphs. Isle of Armor is a great addition to the Wild Area, along with a number of extras. The DLC has a small storyline, you have a number of extra assignments to complete and there is a real challenge waiting for you and Korbfu.

But beyond that, Isle of Armor is an extension of the Wild Area in which you hunt down Pokémons to replenish your Pokedex and ensure you have the strongest team possible. It is a good reason to spend a lot of hours in the game and in that respect I can only recommend this extension. If only because of the fact that you get a Bulbasaur or a Squirtle as a gift.
