Islanders fall to Blue Jackets in OT as slow start continues

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Patrik Laine scored 1:49 into overtime to lift the Columbus Blue Jackets against the New York Islanders 3-2 Thursday night.

Laine’s wrist shot from the left circle knocked him down onto the ice and beat goaltender Ilya Sorokin.

Elvis Merzlikins made 28 saves as Columbus fell to 3-1.

Mathew Barzal scored early in the third period for the Islanders to tie the game after the Blue Jackets scored two goals in 33 seconds to end the second.

Cole Sillinger, 18, scored his first NHL goal and Boone Jenner scored his third goal of the season for Columbus.

Scott Mayfield also scored and Sorokin made 24 saves for the Islanders, who fell to 1-3.

After a goalless first period, the Islanders got on the board at 10:35 of the second when Mayfield intercepted a punt pass into the Blue Jackets ‘zone and found space between the Merzlikins’ pads.

The Islanders dominated the second to the two-minute mark. That’s when Jenner tied on a power play, deflecting Jakub Voracek’s shot from the point on a thrown Sorokin. Columbus followed up with a quick pass from Vladislav Gavrikov behind the goal line to set up Sillinger.

Barzal tied the game with his second goal of the season, a wrist shot over the shoulder at 5:03 of the third.
