Islamabad – The Islamabad High Court suspended the trial court’s sentence against Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan in the Toshakhana corruption case. The division bench ordered Imran’s release on bail of Rs 1 lakh, but he could not be released as the special court yesterday extended his judicial remand till September 13 in the case of violation of the Official Secrets Act.
At the same time, legal experts said that Imran cannot contest the election as the trial court verdict is not overturned. Imran was banned from contesting for 5 years by the Election Commission following his 3-year jail sentence. It is also said that Imran’s legal team made a mistake in asking for the verdict to be suspended. An appeal has also been filed in the Supreme Court seeking a retrial in the Toshakhana case. As the National Assembly was dissolved on August 9, the election has to be held within 90 days.
The Toshakhana case is related to the sale of gifts received while he was the Prime Minister. Imran Attock, who was arrested following the verdict in this case, is in the district jail. The judge who ordered a one-day remand in the official document leak case extended the remand after reaching the jail yesterday and taking Imran’s statement. Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who was arrested on the 19th in the same case, was also sent to judicial custody for 14 days.
