Islam Net, Norwegian politics | Raymond Johansen slashed Islam Net’s plans in Oslo: Now more people are striking back strongly

Several react after city council leader Raymond Johansen slashed Islam Net’s new plans in Groruddalen.

In recent days, there has been a heated debate about Islam Net and the new property purchase in Groruddalen for NOK 60 million. According to the organization, the new property will be used for an activity center for young people.

Immediately after the news came, there were reactions from politicians in Rødt to Frp.

Red politician Eivor Evenrud called it “life-threatening”. FRP politician Jon Helgheim believes the organization “must be stopped”.

However, Islam Net leader Fahad Qureshi has vehemently rejected the criticism.

Recently City Councilor Raymond Johansen went out and said that there is “a lot of gossip”, and that he was “upset”. Today, the property is regulated as an industrial area, and an activity center will require a change of use. Johansen did not want to contribute to them getting.

– Discrimination

Qasim Ali in Minorg, an organization for minority interests in Norway, believes the case has shown what prejudices are at the bottom.

– I react to how several elected representatives have commented on the activity center, which will work with activities. It is presented as a recipe for radicalization and must be cracked down on. These are far too extreme and populist proposals, says Ali to Nettavisen and adds:

– It is clear that discrimination is encouraged. In my eyes, it is discrimination. One should like to disagree, but one cannot discriminate as if they are criminals.

– The organization’s leader has made quite a few statements that are, at least very conservative – has it not shaped people’s impression of the organization?

– Exactly. But we have conservative organizations in several religious circles. This applies to both Christians and other religions. So I think it’s healthy to have a debate about organizations that are problematic. But the criticism must be correct and precise. Unless it is a question of something criminal, or public funds, then the farm owner can sell to whomever you want.

Comment: – Islam Net is a dangerous organization that should be closed down

– Do you think this has to do with prejudice against Muslims?

– It is the type of atmosphere we have in the country now. And there are election years as well. There will be another small battle for the voters as well. That’s why it goes so hard beyond that type of organization as well.

– More people are worried that Islam Net contributes to radicalization?

– I think it has become an established truth. Islam Net has not served as a springboard for radicalization. They have been one of the clearest opponents of this type of activity. It would be completely wrong to use it against Islam Net, says Ali.

– Qureshi has made several statements about homosexuality and gender equality. Do you not think some people think that we will not contribute more of that?

– Fahad has distanced himself from it. If he has distanced himself from it, then he is well on his way to showing that he is moderating. That’s why I think the comparisons to SIAN are so wrong. Because he moderates and distances himself from previous statements.

Comment: – We are not as dangerous as some people think

– Unheard

Associate Professor Lars Gule at Oslo Met believes it is completely wrong to say that Islam Net contributes to radicalization. However, he is clear that it is a conservative and partly reactionary Muslim organization.

– There is no doubt that they represent a theological thinking that is very foreign, and in many people’s eyes extreme. But it is not possible to make a simple causal connection between Islam Net’s activities, jihadism and travel to Syria, Gule tells Nettavisen.

He stressed that there are many good reasons to dislike the views of Islam Net, but that it is within religious freedom.

– There may be a lot about those we dislike, but it must be tolerated. When politicians from Frp to Rødt, and most recently the city council leader talk about stopping this and using the laws and regulations, I think it is unheard of, he says.

The researcher believes that there has been a growing trend towards not tolerating religious environments, and refers to the case where the Christian school NLA’s teacher students are denied internships in the Oslo school, because the school believes marriage should be reserved for a man and a woman.

– There is simply a lack of understanding of what religious freedom means. We must live with what we are provoked by, and cannot meet it with prohibitions and regulations. We have to use arguments, he says.

– Several believe Islam Net can be connected to radicalize more who have traveled to Syria. What do you think about it?

– It is not true. Here people talk without knowing what they are talking about. It is as if we were to stop the FRP because they are supposed to have “radicalized” Anders Behring Breivik because he was a member there for a few years. I will undertake to deliver just as good arguments for the FRP so-called radicalizing ABB as for Islam Net “radicalising” young people into foreign fighters and terrorists, he says and adds:

– But I do not want to claim at all that Breivik was “radicalized” in the FRP, and it is also unreasonable to claim that it was Islam Net that “radicalized” those who traveled to Syria. Both FRP and Islam Net distance themselves from terrorism. Therefore, it is unacceptable and in violation of human rights to want to stop the activities of organizations because someone who has been there ends up as violent extremists, whether they are jihadists or right-wing extremist terrorists. It is to make them responsible for what someone else does, says Gule.

– I am shocked

The artist Sofian Benzaim does not understand anything about the uproar that has come as a result, and believes there is a clear discrimination against Muslims.

– I’m shocked by the commotion. It is a violent double standard that hangs in the air. We still hear the phrase “I disagree with your opinions, but will defend to death that you have them.” It is always used when someone burns the Koran, or when someone has a state-funded family-run hate blog to demonize Muslims. But Muslims are the exception for that kind of justice, Benzaim told Nettavisen.

– Can not Islam Net contribute to radicalizing young people?

– No, and if you make such strong accusations, you should have proof. I know of very many radical organizations, such as those behind Behring Breivik’s ideas. Fjordman received the Fritt Ord award. Shortly after the Breivik assassination, he received an award for such ideas.

He himself believes that caricatures are legal bullying, and he is upset when he sees caricatures being published in Norwegian newspapers.

– But it is the law, as it is interpreted by the experts. But if it is to be interpreted as such, we can not be selective with it. I feel that freedom of speech, which was a shield to protect the opinions of minorities and the oppressed, is increasingly being used as a weapon rather than a shield, he says.
