ISIS leader killed, following the deaths of 2 previous leaders

Radical group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) announced the death of its leader, Abu Hasan al-Hashimi al-Qurashi. Hashimi reportedly died in battle. ISIS then appointed Abu al-Husayn al-Husayn al-Qurashi as Hashimi’s replacement.

Reported AFP extensionWednesday (30/11/2022), spokesperson ISIS revealed that Hashimi, who was an Iraqi, died in “a battle with the enemy of God”. It was not further explained when Hashimi died.

The US military central command (CENTCOM) said Hashimi was killed in an operation led by the Free Syrian Army (FSA) rebel group in Daraa province in southern Syria in mid-October.

Daraa province is mostly controlled by Syrian government forces and rebels who have reached deals with the Syrian regime. In mid-October, the Syrian government said it had launched a joint operation against ISIS with former rebels in the south of the province.

Hashimi died following the deaths of two previous ISIS leaders.

Little is known about Hashimi. Hashimi has just been appointed as the new leader of ISIS in March 2022 after the death of Abu Ibrahim al-Qurashi. At the time, Ibrahim died in an explosion in early February when he was attacked by soldiers United States of America (USA) Idlib province, northwestern Syria, an area controlled by rival jihadists.
