ISIS in Afghanistan Could Rise in 6 Months

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Joint Chiefs of Staff United States of America, General Mark Milley, said that there is a possibility ISIS-K or Al Qaeda in Afghanistan bounce back in the next six to 36 months.

“There is a real possibility that in the near future, about 6, 12, 18, 24, 36 months from now there will be a resurgence of Al Qaeda or ISIS. It is our duty to continue to protect Americans from attacks from Afghanistan,” Milley said at a Council hearing. US Representative on Wednesday (29/9).

The US Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, who was also present at the meeting agreed with Mark Milley’s statement. According to him, these extremist groups will take advantage of the government vacuum in Afghanistan.

“Al Qaeda has been weakened. Now, terrorist organizations are looking for places that don’t have a government so they can train and strengthen themselves. So, of course there is a possibility that this could happen in the future,” Austin was quoted as saying. CNN.

Since the Taliban regained control in Afghanistan in mid-August, ISIS-K has indeed begun to show its fangs.

They again acted by launching a suicide bombing attack at Hamid Karzai Airport, Kabul, on August 26 last. At that time, the airport was crowded with residents who wanted to be evacuated from Afghanistan.

As a result, the suicide bombing attack claimed many lives. According to the latest data, the bomb killed at least 175 people, as well as 13 US troops.

After the US left, ISIS-K returned to action by launching bomb attacks targeting Taliban members in Jalalabad. At least two people died in this attack.

Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, himself claimed that currently there is no longer ISIS or Al Qaeda in Afghanistan. However, Mujahid did not rule out the possibility that Afghans would adopt the ISIS mentality.

Since coming to power, the Taliban have always campaigned that they would not allow Afghanistan to become a hotbed of terrorists in order to gain recognition from the international community. However, the reality on the ground makes a number of countries doubt it.
