Two years after an initial refusal from the ministry, the government announced this Monday, November 20 that the Grenoble Metropolis will finally be able to put in place rent controls. A favorable response following the new request that the intermunicipality had formulated at the end of September 2022. And a victory for its president Christophe Ferrari who had made it a campaign promise in 2020. “It is an aid system for the tenant , to check that there is no excess or abuse,” deciphered the elected official.
Municipalities partially or entirely concerned
The aim of this measure is “to control the rise in rents and protect the purchasing power of tenant residents”, specifies the government. After several months of investigation, the government therefore decided to allow the implementation of rent controls within the scope proposed by local elected officials, namely part of the territory of Grenoble, and the municipalities of Saint-Égrève, Sassenage, Fontaine, Grenoble, Saint-Martin-d’Hères, Seyssinet-Pariset, Échirolles, Le Pont-de-Claix, as well as all the municipalities of Fontanil-Cornillon, La Tronche, Meylan, Domène, Murianette, Venon, Gières , Seyssins, Eybens, Poisat, Bresson, Claix and Varces-Allières-et-Risset.
The metropolis “will thus be able to benefit from rent control until the end of the experiment, set in 2026. A prefectural decree will allow the effective implementation of the control, in particular by setting the rent references, in the during the year 2024. Over the determined perimeter, a maximum rent will be set by category of housing and by geographical sector,” specifies the ministry responsible for housing.
