Ischemic Stroke Treatment: Intravenous Thrombolysis at SANADOR Clinical Hospital

Ischemic stroke acute stroke is a major medical emergency that can lead to death or cause permanent neurological sequelae if the patient does not receive the right treatment in a timely manner. An ischemic stroke occurs when circulation to the brain is partially blocked, most often due to the formation of a clot (thrombus) in a blood vessel.

Signs of an ischemic stroke

Cerebral ischemia manifests itself in signs that are quite easy to notice, so it is important to recognize them and seek emergency medical help.

The affected person presents suddenly facial asymmetryvisible especially at the level of the mouth, cannot raise the arms to the same level and manifest speech disorder.

As soon as we observe these clinical manifestations, we have to call 112so that the patient reaches one as quickly as possible Department of Emergency Receptionswhere they can receive appropriate medical care.

What is intravenous thrombolysis?

In the event of an ischemic stroke, if the patient arrives at the hospital in the so-called “therapeutic window”, i.e. in four and a half hours at most from the appearance of stroke signs, it can be done intravenous thrombolysis.

The procedure is a modern, effective treatment if it is administered on time, under the supervision of qualified medical personnel and if the patient has no contraindications.

Thrombolysis involves the administration by infusion of a thrombolytic substance, which allows dissolution of the blood clot formed and thus helps to restore normal cerebral circulation, so that partially ischemic brain tissue no longer necroses.

Thus, the installation of irreversible neurological sequelae and the occurrence of complications that can lead to death can be prevented. Stroke signs and symptoms are quickly relieved and the patient can recover more easily.

To prevent side effects that may occur during treatment, such as cerebral hemorrhage, the patient must be constantly monitored by experienced medical personnel who can intervene immediately, if necessary.

Thrombolysis treatment is not effective in very severe cases, when severe brain damage has already occurred, and cannot be given in case of hemorrhagic stroke.

Thrombolysis is also contraindicated in the case of associated conditions – cardiovascular, gastrointestinal or cerebral diseases – therefore it is important that the patient first benefit from a complete, rapid assessment of the state of health before starting the treatment.

In certain situations, the only possible treatment for a stroke remains thrombectomy, i.e. the mechanical removal of the blood clot.

SANADOR Clinical Hospital is the only private hospital in Bucharest where intravenous thrombolysis can be administered for patients diagnosed with acute ischemic stroke.

Before treatment is recommended, the patient with signs and symptoms of stroke will benefit from a full medical evaluation in the Emergency Department, performed by experienced emergency physicians, who have access to high-performance imaging equipment for diagnosis. They collaborate with a neurologist, who, after analyzing the results, can recommend thrombolysis or, if this treatment is not suitable, will indicate another therapeutic procedure.

The patient who arrives at the SANADOR Clinical Hospital with an ischemic stroke will be admitted to the Neurology Department, where he will benefit from treatment and constant monitoring. Later, he will have access to consultation and medical rehabilitation procedures, in the Department of Recovery and Physical Medicine of the SANADOR Clinical Hospital.
