Michèle Blom, Chairman of the Board of Directors, opened the Science Evening in the Hanzestrohm Hall. She explained why science is important to Isala with a view to the future. ‘It means we can do more. It makes certain things easier thanks to AI, for example. And science makes it possible to collaborate across hospital boundaries with other hospitals, universities and colleges. I am proud that we invest so much time, energy and effort in science. The ambition is to continue to do this and to go even further.’
Michèle Blom gave the opening speech.
Research highlighted
After this opening speech, Isala’s excellent program was highlighted. Within this program, researchers develop further in conducting research. They work together with universities and colleges. Gynecologist Arnold Jan Kruse and hospital pharmacist Peter ter Horst talked about their research that they carry out as part of the excellence program.
Hanneke Rasing and Marian Winters, nurse researchers in internal medicine, then discussed why nursing research is important. This presentation was followed by pitches in 2 rooms: 7 researchers in the Hanzestrohm Room and 7 in the Dommerholt Room. The researchers each had 5 minutes to present their research. Afterwards, the audience could vote via smartphone for the audience award, which was awarded later this evening.
Lifestyle medicine
Prof. Dr. Rogier Hoenders explained why lifestyle medicine is valuable.
But first the floor was given to guest speaker Prof. Dr. Rogier Hoenders. He is a psychiatrist, professor of meaning and lifestyle and mental health care at the University of Groningen and head of the Integrated Psychiatry Center at Lentis. He spoke about the topic of lifestyle medicine and explained why healthy food, exercise, relaxation, sleep, meaning and social contact, among other things, have a positive effect on health. ‘We only treat once the disease has developed, which is actually disease care. How you go from illness care to actual healthcare is preventable through illness.’ Lifestyle medicine can contribute to this, he showed.
The Isala Science Evening ended festively with the presentation of prizes.
Best video presentation
The prize for the best video presentation went to Julia Hanevelt, coordinating physician-researcher and PhD candidate in Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases. The jury ruled that her research is relevant and her video presentation clear. In her video she talked more about the long-term outcomes of the treatment of T1 versus T2 colon cancer.
Audience Awards
Job Leenen received one of the two audience awards.
According to the audience, the winner of the audience award in the Hanzestrohmzaal was Job Leenen, nursing researcher at Isala Academy and Connected Care Center. He investigated the effect of portable, wireless continuous vital values monitoring in the nursing department with a smart patch.
In the Dommerholt Hall the audience award went to Julia Hanevelt. She pitched her research regarding a cost analysis of colonoscopically assisted laparoscopic wedge resection (CAL-WR) versus segmental colon resection for complex colon polyps.
Innovation Award
Eline Langius received the Innovation Prize.
Eline Langius, AIOS Radiology, took home the innovation prize. She investigated the use of Artificial Intelligence in detecting pulmonary embolism on CT scans of the thorax, which prevents pulmonary embolism from being missed on scans.
Cart-puller
Julia Hanevelt took home 3 prizes this evening, including the Kartrekkersprijs.
The Kartrekker Prize goes to a researcher/PhD candidate who has played a pioneering role in new research within a department, hospital or at a national level. Once again Julia Hanevelt was the lucky one. She was nominated by her colleagues Wouter de Vos and Erik van Westreenen, who, after many words of praise, presented her with the Kartrekkers Prize.
Julia has been working at Isala for 2 years and was busy with all kinds of research in no time, including research into eNose, which smells metastases of colon cancer in someone’s breath. She takes care of the patients in the Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases department with great energy. Erik and Wouter also mentioned her great perseverance. All this and more meant that she received the leading prize.
The Isala Academy organized the Science Evening with financial support from the Science Fund for Medical Specialists Isala (WMI).
