Isala Patient Leaflets: Allergy Research and Patch Tests Explained

Isala Patient Leaflets 7664 Allergy: Allergy Research

The Isala Dermatological Center treats patients for various allergies. With a patch test we investigate whether you have a contact allergy. In this folder you can read what a contact allergy is and how a patch test works. This way you are well prepared for this.

What is Contact Allergy?

In a contact allergy, certain substances from outside your body cause an allergic skin reaction. That looks like inflamed skin. An allergic reaction can happen suddenly and last a long time. Contact allergy is not hereditary.

Will you receive a patch test soon? Please adhere to the following:

2 weeks prior to the patch test: do not put your back in the sun or under a tanning bed. 1 week prior to the patch test: do not apply any hormone ointment or cream to your back. Do not take any antihistamines (anti-allergy tablets) for 48 hours prior to the patch test. Do you take Prednisone? Consult with your dermatologist whether you can continue to take this. Inform your dermatologist if you are pregnant. Do you have a hairy back? Shave your back beforehand. You may still shower the evening before and/or in the morning of the patch test. But don’t use body lotion on your back.

test substances

Usually, the substances that are tested at your place have already been discussed with you. Sometimes we also test your own medicines, cosmetics, ointments, creams and/or skin products. Your dermatologist has also discussed this with you in advance. Bring these substances with you to your first appointment for the patch test.

On the first day, the doctor’s assistant sticks the test substances on your back with plasters. These are skin-friendly plasters. You may temporarily not shower, exercise or do heavy physical work. Not until you have visited the dermatologist again. You have a follow-up appointment 2 days after sticking the patches. The doctor’s assistant will then remove the plasters. And marks the test places with special (invisible) ink. Please note: the ink may stain your clothing. These are difficult to remove. So take an old shirt with you. The doctor’s assistant then takes the first reading. The doctor’s assistant then looks at the first results. You are still not allowed to shower. At your next appointment, the dermatologist will take the second reading and discuss the results with you. Some substances only give a reaction after a week. Then another reading at the dermatologist is needed. We will discuss this with you in advance. Do you still see a skin reaction within 7 days after your appointment with the dermatologist? Then call us to discuss. When all tests have been read, you may shower again. Do you indeed have a contact allergy? Then you will receive information and advice on how best to deal with this.
