Varell is good friends with the comedian Hape Kerkeling, whose genealogical research with traces back to the British royal family was recently in the headlines. “With a best friend like that, you don’t really need any special relatives,” said the Cologne native about the 59-year-old, with whom she did comedy together in the 1990s.

In “Family for All Cases” Varell plays the serial mother of Anna Angelina Wolfers. What it’s about: Does lawyer Julia “Jule” Beyer (Wolfers) find happiness on the idyllic Moselle? Newly separated, she and her son Theo (Aurel Klug) move back to her mother Inga (Varell) in the fictional town of Sonnstein on the Moselle. There she fulfills her long-held lifelong dream: Jule becomes a family judge at the district court.

But the start of her new life is more exciting for Jule than she would like. On the first day, her childhood friend Marco (Arne Löber) turns his head. Even before she has her first hearing, she stumbles into lawyer Chris Hartmann (Kai Albrecht). Chris invites her straight for wine. The romantic evening is not without consequences. Bavaria Fiction produces 80 episodes of the evening series “Family for All Cases”, which runs Monday to Friday.

In view of the many crises in the world, Varell advocates “giving people a chance to empathize with a different world. “Family for all occasions” is certainly a good offer. It’s about love and solidarity in a family. The series also takes place in one of the most beautiful regions in Germany. For me the Moselle is an absolute place of longing.”
