Jakarta –
is World War III is it in sight considering the many great conflicts currently occurring? There are already experts who have warned about the world’s increasingly unstable geopolitical situation.
“Major disasters are often unthinkable until they happen. When the situation worsens, it is time to recognize how unthinkable global conflict is imminent. If war arises in several locations in Europe and Asia, Washington and its allies may not win,” said Robert Gates, former United States Secretary of Defense.
Russia shocked the world by attacking Ukraine. Meanwhile, Israel is fighting against Hamas and it is feared that it will spread. Iran-backed militia groups such as the Houthis, armed with drone attacks, trouble sophisticated western weaponry.
North Korea abruptly ended peace talks with South Korea and stepped up its tests of new missiles, some of them nuclear warheads that could reach the United States.
And China continues to strengthen its fleet in the South China Sea, and could attack Taiwan. Amid all this, the trade networks that underpin the global economy, especially the supply of silicon chips and rare but critical minerals, are starting to fragment.
“We are at the beginning of a new era, moving from a post-war world to a pre-war world,” Dutch Admiral Rob Bauer said at a NATO conference. In other words, he believes that the world is currently on the brink of war.
So, are we headed towards World War III? “The answer is not yet certain. On the one hand, the costs of war and the risk of inevitable destruction for both sides seem increasingly high. On the other hand, countries like North Korea and Iran cannot be trusted to act rationally,” said Professor Andrew Dorman from the institute Chatham House strategic thinker.
“If many people don’t realize how close the world is to destruction from fierce and interconnected conflicts, perhaps it is because they have forgotten how the last global war was fought,” Gates said. In World War, countries suddenly united to be stronger in global conflict.
Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and Imperial Japan only formed an axis after the rest of the world began to confront their regional conflicts. They unite because of the same goals and enemies. That’s what seems to be happening at the moment.
“China wants to replace the US as the leading global power and push it out of the western Pacific region, while Russia wants to regain the territory and influence it lost due to the collapse of the Soviet Union. In the Middle East, Iran and its proxies are determined to destroy Israel and fight for regional dominance,” popar he.
Russia, China, North Korea and Iran have put aside their differences for now, linking their economies and exchanging technology, training and weapons in an effort to confront a common enemy.
The worst scenario is of course a war involving nuclear power. The US, UK, France, Russia, China, Israel, Pakistan, India and North Korea each have nuclear arsenals. Iran may be on the verge of having one.
And the impact of a nuclear conflict would be unimaginable. Of course, everyone hopes that the current conflict will not spread and lead to World War III.
