Is WhatsApp mutating into Instagram? Likes and mentions in status

The status is the WhatsApp equivalent of the Instagram story and, with likes and private mentions, it now has features that make the format Instagramesque and make WhatsApp more like a social medium.

“Share the love”: This is the message that the Meta subsidiary WhatsApp is giving users as part of another update. After the messaging app introduced various filters and backgrounds for the video calls in the app at the beginning of the month, there are now three new features for the WhatsApp status that make it appear much more like an Instagram Stories copy.

WhatsApp with a social media focus: Statuses are becoming more and more like stories

With over two billion active users, users of the app can use WhatsApp status to stay in touch with friends and family and provide them with updates in a visual context. Now everyone who uses this status can access new functions that bring the format very close to Instagram Stories. Likes, for example, are new. Users can tap on a green heart and those whose status is liked can see the green hearts in the list.

Creators can also ensure that people they know see their status by integrating private mentions. The tagged people will then be notified privately.

Anyone who is mentioned in the status can also share it again. From now on, the new functions will be introduced gradually. In addition, further updates, for example for the “Current” tab, will be made available in the future. And this may make the messaging app even more similar to Instagram and the like.
