“Is the use of nutmeg in food prohibited?” This question was asked, during the live broadcast by the Egyptian Dar Al Iftaa, on his official page on the social network “Facebook”, and the question was answered during the live broadcast by Dr. Muhammad Wissam, Secretary General of Fatwa and member of the High Advisory Council for Training and Research at the Egyptian Dar Al Iftaa.
Wissam said in his response to the question, “It is not prohibited, but it is prohibited if it is eaten in abundance which leads to distraction or leads to what leads to intoxication or intoxication.”
In detailing the fatwa, the Egyptian Dar Al-Iftaa previously answered a question on his Facebook page: “What is the ruling on the trade in Nutmeg?”, saying: “Nutmeg: fruits hemispherical, and its trees are pyramidal high, and it is a sweet stimulant that helps expel gas from the stomach, and has a narcotic effect when taken in large quantities, and leads to poisoning if taken in excessive quantities, and has a pleasant smell and taste tending towards bitter., dry, aromatic peels, from which a yellowish fat is extracted, called perfume oil, containing about 4% of an amazing substance called myristicin, and the rest are glycerides of a number of fatty acids, including: salt acid, stearic acid and palmitic acid. It is added to sweets and some foods, and is also used in soap. Nutmeg has many uses in treating certain diseases, and it is also used to flavor foods and drinks.
And Dar Al Iftaa continued, “The jurists agreed that it is forbidden to eat it and eating it in large quantities which leads to intoxication, and a group of imams allowed its limited use which does not lead to narcolepsy or intoxication. Imam Al-Ramli Al-Shafi’i said in his “Fatwas” (4/71) when asked about the ruling on eating it he replied:[نعم يجوز إن كان قليلًا، ويحرم إن كان كثيرًا] 1 AH, and the scholar Al-Hattab Al-Maliki said in “Mawahib Al-Jalil” (1/90, ed. Dar Al-Fikr): [قال البرزلي: أجاز بعض أئمتنا أكل القليل من جوزة الطيب لتسخين الدماغ، واشترط بعضهم أن تختلط مع الأدوية, والصواب العموم] Ah, and on this basis: there is nothing wrong with trading nutmeg according to the controls established in the principles of trade and adopted by local and international food and health organizations, as those who buy it often use it in the lawful way , and whoever uses it in a prohibited way, the prohibition belongs only to him; Because holiness is not required.
