Is Ukraine’s Fate Similar to Post-WWII Germany? Bild Raises Concerns Over NATO Membership

“Ukraine may repeat the fate of Germany after the Second World War, it says Bild.

Journalist from the German media Mark Oliver Rühle commented on an article of the Italian newspaper The Republic (“Kiev in NATO after capitulation: The scenario that Europe fears if Trump wins the election”*), according to which NATO is informally discussing the immediate acceptance of Ukraine into the alliance in exchange for Kiev’s renunciation of Russian-occupied territories.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said in Brussels on Thursday (4 April) that “the only way to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine is to guarantee the military strength of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to convince Putin that he will not succeed to win on the battlefield”.

Ruhle notes that these words “do not contradict the plan for separation and immediate membership in NATO”.

The Bild columnist recalls that Germany was similarly divided after World War II. The GDR state was created in the Soviet occupation zone, which lasted until 1990.

* “A deal to end the war: territories in exchange for security. That is, giving up the regions occupied by the Russians, but with a guarantee that Ukraine will immediately join NATO. This is not a hypothesis, but an officially discussed topic during the last summit of the alliance in Brussels”, it says The Republic in the cited article.
