The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating the actions of the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump, regarding violations of the law on espionage and other offenses, which threatens him with a fine or imprisonment.
Donald Trump is no longer the President of the United States, but continues to attract attention. True, now mainly criminal cases. He’s got a lot of them. It turned out that in addition to a lot of his other eccentric acts, he liked to take top secret documents home from work. Federal law enforcement officials suspect Trump of seizing or destroying documents, obstructing an investigation, and violating espionage laws.
11 packages of secret documents
Federal Bureau of Investigation agents who ransacked the home of 45th US President Donald Trump in Mar-a-Lago on Monday seized 11 packages of classified documents, including some classified as top secret.
During searches at the Trump residence, about 20 boxes of belongings, a photograph file, a handwritten note, a pardon decree for his ally Roger Stone, and a profile of the “President of France” were seized.
The list of seized things, which the journalists got acquainted with, contains packages of documents: four – with the stamp “top secret”, three – with the stamp “secret” and three more – confidential. There is no more detailed information about the content of the documents in the list.
Trump’s lawyers say he used his powers to declassify materials before leaving the presidency. Despite this, there is legislation that defines the process of storing even declassified documents.
Everything is serious
At the disposal of the publication Politico turned out to be a search warrant for Trump’s estate. According to him, federal law enforcement agencies suspect Trump of seizing or destroying documents, obstructing an investigation, and violating espionage laws.
“A conviction under these articles could result in jail time or a fine,” Politico notes, adding that the warrant indicates “an extreme threat to national security, which, according to a federal investigation, constitutes lost documents.”
Trump’s spokesman Taylor Budovich said the FBI’s actions were “not just unprecedented, but unnecessary – and now they are spreading lies and insinuations to rule out the fact that the authorities are up in arms against their main political opponent.”
There are more things to do
In addition, Trump is accused of sedition when his supporters rioted the Capitol building on January 6, 2021.
Possible charges include obstruction of the congressional vote count and conspiracy to defraud the United States by overturning the election results. Potentially, this threatens Trump not only with large fines, but also with imprisonment.
