Is TikTok about to become the new Spotify?

Tiktok is already a staple in the music world. But it is not about to stop there. By filing a patent for a new application dedicated solely to streaming, TikTok Musicthe company intends to become hegemonic in this field.

Yes, you heard right. TikTok will continue to be relevant for a little while. ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has just filed a trademark application for its possible music streaming service in the United States. Bad news for the American giant, Apple Music and Swedish, Spotify, (and our little French pride Deezer), which currently dominate the market. The application, soberly named TikTok Music, would allow users “buy, play, share and download music, songs and albums”.

Tiktok, already a full-fledged music platform?

No more need to innovate to make the buzz. One of the secrets is to get known on Tiktok. In just four years, the social network for creating and sharing videos has become a music medium in its own right. Hits are born there, classics revive there, artists reveal themselves or reinvent themselves there. Tiktok helps bring songs to the mainstream and get them to the top of charts like the Billboard 100, Spotify Viral 50, and Apple Music Custom Playlists. Sometimes choreographed, sometimes parodied, all your favorite summer hits will already be on the platform. So much so that the most listened to songs on the platform have been reworked by an orchestra, with a view to the release of a compilation album entitled TikTok Classics : Meme and Viral Hits.

ByteDance is not new to music streaming. The company has already released the Resso application. The latter was launched in three countries, namely India, Brazil and Indonesia. And in November 2021 alone, according to The Information, it had more than 40 million monthly users in those countries. Suffice to say that it attracts. It displays the lyrics of the songs that we listen to in real time, a bit like karaoke. It also allows users to leave comments, which is very practical. To be continued…
