French President Emmanuel Macron will consult today with his predecessors Francois Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy in an attempt to break the political impasse in the country, the media reported, DPA reported.
Macron also plans to meet former Socialist Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve (pictured above)France Info and BeFM TV reported, citing sources close to the former leaders.
Cazeneuve headed Hollande’s government from December 2016 to May 2017 and may run for the post again, media have suggested.
A month and a half after early parliamentary elections in France, Macron still has not appointed a new prime minister. There is also no prospect of a viable governing majority.
The election produced a surprise victory for the left-wing New Popular Front alliance, which edged out Macron’s centrist forces and far-right forces around Marine Le Pen, who were predicted to win. Neither camp secured an outright majority.
The Left Alliance has on several occasions clearly stated its claims to rule. However, Macron has ruled out forming an alliance government on the grounds that it would be ousted immediately by a vote of no confidence.
Despite several rounds of consultations between Macron and the parties, it remains unclear how a stable government can be formed in France. Coalitions are unusual in the country, which makes it difficult to form a working government, DPA points out.
