Is This the End of the Camaro? Chevrolet Announces Withdrawal of Popular Model

Is the definitive end of the legend coming? Indeed, Chevrolet has announced the withdrawal of the basic four-cylinder variant of the Camaro from the range, which is only the first step towards the end of production of the current sixth generation of the iconic muscle car, whose history goes back to the depths of the sixties and is closely intertwined with the Mustang, Challenger, Charger and other muscular eight-cylinder monsters. and indeed with the entire American car culture.

The Camaro was born in 1966 as a direct response to the phenomenal success of the Mustang, and Chevrolet made no secret of it. Even when reporters asked product managers what a “Camaro” was, they replied that it was a small, vicious beast that eats mustangs. The Camaro wasn’t as sexy as its Ford counterpart, but it always drove a little better and had a little more power (that is, if you don’t compare it to the tough Shelbys).

The first two generations of classic shapes (60s and 70s) are the most popular among fans, the more modern, sportier variants from the 80s and 90s have lost a piece of their visual identity. But it made a full comeback with the retro-modern fifth generation in 2010, which was once again an honest American muscle car.

But the sixth generation introduced in 2016 lost part of its visual charm again – Chevrolet did not manage the transition from retro to pure modernity as successfully as Ford designers. The popularity of the Camaro, which in truth has always lagged behind the generally more popular Mustang, began to gradually decline and after a failed facelift at the turn of 2018/19, it fell straight away. So Chevrolet had no choice but to start thinking about when to turn off the switch. And that moment will come at the end of this year…

The front end of the facelifted Camaro of the sixth generation just didn’t work out, and it was quickly visible in the outflow of customers.

The final joy for rock fans will be the farewell version aptly called the Collector’s Edition. It applies to both the basic 1LT six-cylinder engine, the more powerful SS version with an atmospheric eight-cylinder or the top-of-the-line ZL1 version with a supercharged eight-cylinder.

It features modified bodywork, special 20-inch wheel designs and exclusive Panther Black Matte paint – the name is a symbolic reference to the black paint finish of the original Camaro from the 1960s, and for the first time ever, a Camaro is offered with matte black paint from the factory. The icing on the cake will be a metallic black stripe running along the top of the car from the hood to the trunk lid. The Collector’s Edition Camaro is to be produced in just 350 examples, each with the serial number of a specific piece on the steering wheel.

The Collector’s Edition is likely to be the swan song of the legendary Camaro. The Collector’s Edition features matte black paint complete with a metallic black stripe, front bumper splitter, rear spoiler and exclusive wheels.

They themselves probably don’t know that yet, because no assurances about the upcoming presentation of the successor come, even though the fans of this automotive legend are waiting for it like mercy. Hopefully Chevrolet won’t back down and return the Camaro to the market as an electric SUV, for example…

Will you mourn the legendary Chevrolet Camaro?

Well, sure, it’s a legend. End of an era.

Not at all, I like the Ford Mustang or the Dodge Challenger better.
