Is this the cause of black fungus suddenly exploding in India?

Jakarta

Black fungus infection in India exploded in the midst of the Corona pandemic. Representatives of the Ministry of Health suspect that irrational use of steroid drugs is the cause.

In a daily press conference related to COVID-19 on Saturday (22/5/2021), the Indian Ministry of Health highlighted that cases of ‘black fungus’ mucormycosis can be prevented. This can happen, if the unnatural use of steroid drugs can be stopped.

“We have to fight mucormycosis. The disease has now become an epidemic, because it is attacking COVID-19 patients. The role of steroids in (causing) mucormycosis is undeniable, “said member Niti Aayog (health) VK Paul. Hindustan Times, Monday (24/5/202!)

“Giving steroids with high doses and administration for a long time is irrational,” he continued.

Paul said the use of steroids could help avoid complications arising from COVID-19. However, the use of inappropriate steroid doses can lead to disease mucormycosis in humans.

COVID-19 also affects diabetics and there may be additional reasons for mucormycosis. Countries have announced measures to contain the disease. All steps are being taken to control this disease,” explained Paul.

In addition, Health Ministry secretary Lav Agarwal said the government had asked five companies to increase production of Amphotericin-B, a drug necessary for the treatment of COVID-19. He also said that the government has given permission to five additional producers to produce the drug.

Paul also said that mucormycosis existed before the pandemic, but it was a rare disease.

As is known, mucormycosis is an infection caused by the fungus mucormycetes that can enter the body through breathing or skin injury. This has been reported a lot in COVID-19 patients.

Generally, the immune system can ward off this fungal disease. However, irrational use of steroids during COVID-19 treatment, uncontrolled blood sugar, and impaired immunity put a person at high risk of contracting the disease.

So far, the total cases of mucormycosis or black fungus have increased by nearly 9,000 cases. At least 15 states in India have reported cases related to this disease.
