The Himiway C5 is truly an eye-catcher: With its motorcycle saddle, wide tires and raised handlebars, it differs from most e-bikes on the market. The experts at eBikeNews subjected the C5 to a test and how it performs in everyday life. Since Himiway offers its e-bikes via direct delivery and without a dealer, the bike you order comes pre-assembled to your home in a large box. The weight of the delivery is an impressive 50 kg and the e-bike is not a lightweight either, more on that later.

The delivery includes all the components needed to have the Himiway C5 ready to ride in just under half an hour. According to the testers, the final assembly was easy, but due to the high weight, the help of a second person is useful when unpacking and assembling. The first impression of the e-bike is good: the experts see no sloppy welds or paint defects on the solid matt white frame. The long motorcycle saddle, which also has space for a pillion passenger behind the driver, definitely stands out. One gimmick is the coffee cup holder on the handlebars, which we have never seen on e-bikes before.

Drive and brakes of the Himiway C5

When equipping the C5, Himiway relies on tried and tested components from well-known manufacturers. The hydraulic disc brakes with a diameter of 180 millimeters come from Tektro. The gears are a Shimano Altus 7-speed derailleur, which Himiway has already installed on other models. There is also a throttle on the left handlebar grip, but this can only be used to start up to a maximum of 6 km/h. On the rear wheel there is a geared hub motor with 250 watts of continuous power and a powerful 86 Nm of torque. The motor is activated via a torque sensor, which enables a natural driving feel. A battery with Samsung cells and a capacity of 960 Wh is on board to power the drive. This is located under the down tube and can be removed for charging. The current battery level is displayed on the top of the housing by an LED bar. The large battery alone weighs 5 kilograms, the total weight of the Himiway C5 is an impressive 40.5 kilograms.

Coherent equipment for an e-bike suitable for everyday use

As is usual with cruiser bikes, the C5 has wide tires in the format 20 by 4 inches from Kenda. The thick tires fulfill two functions: The coarse tread provides grip on unpaved paths, and on asphalt the tires provide additional cushioning for the e-bike. The Kevlar insert in the tires is helpful as puncture protection against the penetration of sharp objects. The full suspension consists of a suspension fork with 150 millimeters of travel and lockout function as well as a damper on the rear frame. Both suspension elements can be adjusted to the rider’s weight. Otherwise, the Himiway C5 has integrated LED lighting with a brake light function and a sturdy side stand. The testers complain that the e-bike unfortunately lacks a luggage rack and only has a short mudguard installed on the rear wheel. This is due to the motorcycle-style design.

Practical test of the Himiway C5

The seating position on the Himiway C5 is relaxed and comparable to cruiser motorcycles. This means a relatively low seat, slightly bent legs and a slightly higher handlebar. On the C5, however, the handlebars can be adjusted forwards and backwards to adjust your posture while riding. The thumb throttle helps well when starting off and getting the heavy e-bike moving. The tester describes the motor support from the torque sensor as a natural driving experience. However, due to the seating position, you cannot stretch your legs. This means that you lack the necessary power on inclines and pressure from pedal force on the sensor to reach higher speeds over 20 km/h. An adjustment of the power curve by the manufacturer would be desirable here.

The hydraulic disc brakes from Tektro also offer sufficient deceleration downhill without being rough or harsh. The powerful drive is noticeable on inclines and the e-bike masters gradients of up to around 10 percent without any effort. However, when it gets steeper, the previously described power on the pedals and the torque sensor is missing, according to the testers.

The full suspension in combination with the fat bike tires absorbs every bump: The Himiway C5 is accordingly comfortable to ride. In the practical test for the range, the battery still shows 62 percent remaining capacity after 50 kilometers on support level three. This means that the range of 129 kilometers promised by the manufacturer is realistic. As already mentioned, the Himiway C5 can theoretically accommodate two people due to the long seat. In the eBikeNews test, these are the author and his seven-year-old son. However, due to the changed seating position, the driver sits relatively far forward and the distance to the pedals is even smaller. This may be fine for a short ride, but longer distances would definitely be too uncomfortable and strenuous according to the tester.
