The tool that brought so much controversy to our soccer lives has already left a bitter experience in the Copa América 2019.
After so much waiting, the America Cup finally come back in 2021 to delight us with the best football on the continent. And to give it an extra ingredient, the managers decided to re-implement the controversial technology of the WHERE, which is already the basis in many competitions worldwide.
Unfortunately the history between this tool and the oldest tournament in the world is not positive. The first time that Video Arbitration was used in the CONMEBOL joust was in the 2019 edition and the critics did not wait.
Between the time it took to resolve the plays and the decisions that affected various teams, the fans were not at all satisfied with their role, so this year we will have to “deal” with technology again.
In the previous contest, the tool intervened 17 times within the 18 matches that were played. There were two sustained decisions and 15 changes, a case that did not leave many happy.
What is a fact is that with the passage of time, the referees are increasingly able to use the VAR in the best way and at the right time, although there will always be a play that will divide opinions.
Recently, the CONMEBOL Directorate of Referees released the list of whistlers summoned to the continental tournament. In total, 14 main collegiate members, 22 assistants and 16 VAR referees, in addition to 10 support in case of any eventuality.
This is how the Copa América 2021 prepares to be spectacular, but equal or more controversial than the previous edition.
