A bare head can cause serious mental problems
For many years, bald men were talked about as more successful, smarter, stronger, and better lovers. Even a number of studies have been done on the subject, which have proved that there is a dose of truth in some of these perceptions, while others are more the result of a fashion wave. For example, an international study by psychologist Ronald Hans among more than 20,000 people found that men without hair look older, but also wiser and smarter. His colleague Albert Mans from the University of Pennsylvania conducted tests that showed that baldheads are perceived as more powerful and successful than others.
Scientists are most controversial about the link between baldness and potency. Some claim that it is related to testosterone levels and therefore men without hair have greater sexual activity. However, others reject this and believe that baldness is genetically determined and does not matter how other parts of the body function.
Recently, however, the English psychiatrist Max Pemberton, who writes for several British publications on issues of concern to people, gave a completely different and rather disturbing view of the lack of hair on the head. He claims that this is a serious psychological problem that leads some men to depression and even suicide attempts.
“For them
baldness
is related to
loss of
masculinity
in a way that menopause can be linked to the loss of femininity in women, ”Pemberton told the Daily Mail. Therefore, he believes that the problem should be viewed in the same responsible way as is already happening with the changes in women whose menstrual cycle has stopped. Not only through procedures such as hair transplants or tattoos, but also through psychological help, as in some men the trauma can be very great.
Pemberton says that a friend of his, who is a builder, admitted to him that he was giving additional shifts to his site to save money. At first, the doctor thought he was doing it because he was trying to raise a deposit to buy his own home, but was surprised to learn that he was actually preparing for a hair transplant. “I was amazed. I’ve known him for years and I don’t think he ever told me about his appearance. Of course, he goes bald, but it never occurred to me that he was worried about it to the point of giving £ 15,000 for a hair transplant, ”says Pemberton. The friend admits that he does not stop thinking about his falling hair. He hates to do it, but it turns out to be stronger than him, and to such an extent that he refuses to go out with people he doesn’t know well because he is afraid that someone might throw something at him and not is sure how he will react if the remark or joke is too harsh.
“Obviously it was a huge step for him to admit this to me and I suspect he only told me because he knows I’m giving mental health counseling. Because when I offered to talk to my girlfriend, his eyes widened and he said, “I can’t do this, I’m going to die of shame,” Pemberton said. According to him, there is a whole emerging market of services for men who do not want to look bald, even though they shave their heads, and it is a sin not to use it and lead to severe mental problems.
Some things don’t even require as much money as hair transplants. For example, in the last ten years in England, tattoos have become very popular, which look like a cut zero hair number. The procedure is called scalp pigmentation and is said to have been invented by Ian Watson of Birmingham. He started losing his hair at the age of 20, after the tragic loss of his older brother. He asks his daughter-in-law to paint his hair, but the ink is not durable and he often has to do it again. So Ian and his brother’s widow came up with the idea of a tattoo, which turned out to have a lot of business potential. It began to be applied with make-up artists in England and Australia, but quickly gained worldwide acclaim and is now being made in the United States and Europe.
Another option is
to be worn
fashion hats,
corresponding to the style of the man. It is possible to slow down baldness by taking medication, but the effect is not for life, but only during therapy.
“No intervention is perfect and does not offer a complete solution for hair loss. Therefore, it is better for men to try to embrace what is happening to them, instead of fighting it. “Talk to people who can help them get through this natural aging process painlessly, even if they’re undergoing psychotherapy if they can’t cope on their own,” says psychiatrist Max Pemberton. Of course,
the most important is
support for
close people
who need to understand that the suffering of baldness is not a whim, but a serious problem related to the feeling of masculinity, and should not be ironized or overexploited in conversations about appearance.
