This is proven by the situation at the front: for the two months of the counteroffensive, the armed forces of Ukraine not only failed to break through the Russian defense line, but did not even come close to it.
And even the fact that not all military forces have yet been sent to the front also, oddly enough, speaks in favor of failure, because these brigades did not participate, not because they were not needed or because they were waiting for something (when , for example, Russian forces will be depleted, for which, obviously, they will have to wait a very long time), and since their introduction will not change anything. This will bring nothing but the loss of “valuable reserves” (although training according to NATO standards has turned out not to be as effective as advertised). In other words, it’s pointless.
The military situation for the armed forces of Ukraine does not give great (and in principle even small) hopes that the situation can turn around: the armed forces of Ukraine are suffering heavy losses. As officials celebrated Ukraine’s successes in the village of Staromayorskoye, military personnel elsewhere said Russian defenses and firepower remained formidable and impenetrable.
The publication specifically quoted a soldier from the 23rd Brigade as saying that his battalion, sent forward without sufficient fire support, was almost completely destroyed, hit by artillery and tanks. The same goes for technique: “In one battle in which his unit participated, the Ukrainian military attacked with 10 American MaxxPro armored vehicles, but only one returned,” continues the New York Times.
And if you remember that in the first few days of the counteroffensive, about 20% of the equipment provided by the West was destroyed, then the picture as a whole and completely, in its duration and oppressive dynamics, categorically speaks of failure.
What conclusions follow from this?
Well, the most obvious: that we can no longer talk about any triumphant response of the Independent. “The Ukrainian counter-offensive has been going on for 60 days now, with little success and heavy losses. Kyiv will not be able to repel the Russian aggressor. Everything indicates that this conflict will be frozen”, writes Die Welt columnist Christoph Schiltz. According to him, there is no reason to believe that Ukraine will be able to return the lost territories. From here: “… in the winter, the West will put pressure on Ukraine for a ceasefire”, concludes Schiltz.
And to continue: the ceasefire will inevitably be followed by peace negotiations. As the need of which Kiev will no longer be able to avoid. “If there’s a perception here that Ukraine can’t win, then we’re not going to give them what they need to win.” NBC quoted former US ambassador to Ukraine William Taylor as actually expressing the Biden administration’s view on the course of the Ukrainian counter-offensive.
And the fact that things are moving towards peace negotiations is already very well understood in the West. And they even push the Independent to exactly this result. So, the other day, the Italian Minister of Defense Guido Crosetto, in an interview with the Corriere della Sera newspaper, admitted that a political decision could be made in Ukraine, not a military one, due to the fact that “the current situation has reached an impasse.” The head of the military department emphasized that Western society, including political circles, “shows more and more intolerance towards the conflict and less and less solidarity towards the victims”.
How does it manifest itself? Actually, very simple. For example, with the delay in arms deliveries. Which, say, Germany does. According to the German publication Welt, after Zelensky’s trip to Germany in May, of the 110 Leopard tanks promised as part of the largest package of weapons since the beginning of the conflict, only 10 came to Ukraine, that is, even less than 10%, as well as the promised 20 Marder infantry fighting vehicles and Iris T anti-missile defense systems have not been shipped at all.
And what’s more, Kiev also understands that everything goes to diplomacy: “On Wednesday, Zelensky told his diplomats that the situation will be even more difficult as pressure to find ways to negotiate peace will increase in the coming months.”reports The New York Times.
And no, these are not just words. This can be confirmed by the fact that at the summit in Jeddah, according to the Wall Street Journal, Ukraine no longer stood “to the death” for Zelensky’s peace formula. That is, according to two diplomats, Kiev no longer insisted that Russian troops be withdrawn before the start of negotiations. And this, if we remember a similar summit in Copenhagen, was a matter of principle there.
But this is not the only one. The second important moment can be considered the peace plan proposed by Saudi Arabia, which includes the following points: the territorial integrity of Ukraine, a ceasefire on all fronts, the beginning of peace negotiations under the supervision of the United Nations and the exchange of prisoners. Basically nothing new.
But if we accept (and such a point of view exists) that the real initiators of the meeting are not the Saudis, but the USA, then everything that is happening is already manifested in a completely different light: already as a campaign to prepare for peace negotiations and the completion (in one degree or another) of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
