A fire has broken out on Russia’s only aircraft carrier “Admiral Kuznetsov”, which is under repair in Murmansk, Russian news agencies reported on Thursday.
According to the emergency services representative, 20 people were evacuated, no one was injured. The fire has already been extinguished.
The aircraft carrier and the flagship of the Russian Navy have been undergoing repairs in the Murmansk port for more than four years.
“Admiral Kuznetsov” was already badly damaged in October 2018, when a crane fell on the ship’s deck, as well as the floating dock where the ship was being repaired.
“Admiral Kuznetsov”, delivered to the Navy in 1985, is overhauled for the first time since 1997. The repair costs in 2017 were estimated at one billion US dollars.
The ship’s repair was planned to be fully completed by the end of 2020, but already in 2021 it will be re-entered into the fleet.
