Is the Samsung S20 Ultra 5G really worth 500 euros more than the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra?

The Xiaomi 10 Ultra and the Samsung S20 Ultra 5G. Both 5G, both just hit the shelves and both received excellent reviews. But is that Samsung really worth 500 euros more?

The Samsung S20 Ultra 5G received rock-solid reviews upon its release in April. Samsung is a top brand, in the premium segment it is almost unbeatable. But the price tag of 1,249 euros is also there. In addition, the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra also just came out. 500 euros cheaper and actually fierce competition.

  • The price: For a Samsung the S20 Ultra 5G got a hefty price tag: 1.249 for the cheapest edition. The Xiaomi plays a category lower with 749 euro.

The exterior and the style

  • Of exterior: Samsung S20 Ultra comes in black or gray, so a little printed. The Xiaomi Mi10 Ultra in black or transparent.
  • Screen size: Samsung has a gigantic screen: 6.9 inches. Xiaomi keeps it at just 6.7 inches. Whatever you want.
  • Cameragat: Samsung keeps things very simple and tidy, with minimal intrusion at the front. Xiaomi has a more traditional distortion on the screen, but at the top left corner. At the back, the Samsung S20 seems to have a semi-professional installation.

De specs

  • Processor: The Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra does it with a Snapdragon 865 octacore. That’s more than enough for what this smartphone is trying to do. The Samsung scores slightly better, but must also be able to handle many more camera operations at the same time.
  • Screen: a dynamic AMOLED for Samsung, a regular AMOLED for Xiaomi: for the layman there is hardly any difference.
  • If it’s on speed from your screen, the Xiaomi Ultra actually beats the Samsung. The refresh rate is the same, the Samsung processor is slightly better, but so is the screen quality. Anyone who runs many apps at the same time will therefore see a marginal difference, where the Xiaomi draws the longest straw.
  • Each 12 gigabytes of RAM.

Battery

  • Xiaomi has a 4,500mAh battery. You also have to give it back 70 percent of your battery power in half an hour with the fast charger. You can easily get a day’s battery out of it, even with fairly solid gaming.
  • The Samsung does it with 5,000mAh and therefore delivers slightly better results: 25 hours of talk time, 24 hours of battery, although that is of course a bit disappointing in practice. Here too, there is fast and wireless charging.

The cameras

  • There is little debate about this: the Samsung S20 presents itself as the king of the camera, and it is. One front camera with autofocus and no less than four clappers on the back, two of which with hybrid zoom: that is unpacking and sending the pro home.
  • Which is not to say that Xiaomi does not get good conveniences: also one front camera and four rear. Even if they are of lower quality, that gives quite a bit of clout.

Connectivity

  • They both have 5G and WiFi 6 on board. Hoera!
  • The Mi10 no longer has a headphone jack.
  • The Samsung S20 does have a USB-C on board.

Gadgets

  • Both a fingerprint reader, at the front.
  • The Xiaomi has an NFC, so you can connect your smart car to it. Gimmicky, but fun.
  • Samsung also has an RGB_light sensor, which can only benefit your photos.

The final verdict

Do you really notice no difference between the Samsung S20 Ultra and the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra? Of course it is. At Samsung it is just that little bit faster, just that bit brighter and the South Korean premium players have prepared another beauty of a smartphone. So he is really better.

The question remains whether you need a smartphone of 500 euros more expensive. As an Instagram model, it may be justifiable, but be aware that you are there Samsung paid so many euros more for it just that little bit more. Those four ultimate cameras are great, but if you just want to put your kids photos on Facebook, they may not be necessary.

And so you can make that case for a lot of comparison points. The fact remains that Samsung is better, but that Xiaomi has put down a stunner of a smartphone in a price category lower. Not equally good, but in practice, just as useful for the average user. Since they both have 5G in house, they are also both future-proof. The Samsung will probably last a year longer. But whether that is worth 500 euros
