Sunday, June 19, 2022 ((rezonodwes.com)) – Unlike the Republic of Haiti, the Dominican Republic has managed to be connected and benefit from the submarine fiber optic networks of the two largest telecommunications companies sharing the Latin American and Caribbean market: Cable &Wireless Communication et America Movil (Claro).
These two incumbent operators in the region are in direct competition with Digicel in several telecom markets in the Latin America and Caribbean zone.
They never digested the fact that in the early 2000s, Denis O’Brien came to impose Digicel as a leading Telecom operator in the region while dispossessing them of significant market shares.
Today, Cable & Wireless Communications and America Movil are taking historic revenge on Digicel due, in particular, to the following facts:
- The reduction, in favor of IP (Internet Protocol) networks, of the importance of voice communication and switched networks which made Digicel happy and strong in the early 2000s
- The purchase of ” Colombus International », the Telecom operator owning the largest fiber optic cable network in the Americas and the Caribbean for 2.3 billion USD by Cable & Wireless instead of Digicel in 2015. A major fact that changed the destiny of Digicel.
- An undeclared strategic alliance between America Mobil (CLARO) and Cable & Wireless to counter the influence of Digicel in the area.
The presence of various fiber optic networks, both “C&W Networks” and “CLARO” is also an expression of this strategic alliance against Digicel in the country of Abinader.
And Natcom, voluntarily or involuntarily, finds itself, like an instrument, at the heart of this strategy which aims to reduce to a minimum the influence in the Zone of the company of Denis O’Brien which was recently forced to abandon Panama. precisely because of this Claro/Cable & Wireless alliance.
At least four (4) submarine cable networks of “C&W Networks” operated or owned by Cable & Wireless Communications and at least two fiber optic networks of America Movil (Claro) are present in the Dominican territory.
Indeed, with the aim of bridging the digital divide through a significant increase in Internet and data capacity offered to the Dominican people, submarine fiber optic networks with the following characteristics connect cities in the Dominican Republic to the whole world .
