Currently, people in the United States can use their
driver license
as identification to board a plane. However, with the ley Real IDthis will change soon. Now, the Ministry of Transportation of that country released some updates in the only accepted types of identification.
What is a Real ID and what is it for?
After postponing it for many years, starting May 7, 2025, the US will implement the REAL ID Law. Therefore, standard driver’s licenses issued by states, other than Real ID, will no longer be accepted if they are used as identification for three purposes: Boarding commercial flights, entering federal government buildings or military installations. Although that was what was agreed upon, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) of the USA announced a final rule at the end of October. Depending on the institution, they will be accepted mobile driver licenses (mDL) as a valid form of identity verification at security checkpoints.

What is a Mobile Driver’s License (mDL)?
The mDL is a digital representation of a driver’s license traditional, which is stored in an application on the user’s smartphone. States currently issuing mDL include Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, New York, Ohio and Utah. Once approved, these mDLs will remain valid in the security checkpointsproviding an alternative convenient to the passport or physical Real ID identification.
