Is the pandemic out of control in Portugal or are we at the same point as two months ago? The answer in six graphs

In mid-May, the Portuguese miracle was still the narrative. Between days 1 and 15, the average number of cases was 235 per day, the pandemic was not concentrated in any part of the country and there had even been a day (May 11) with less than 100 cases. On the other hand, deaths also stabilized in just one digit every 24 hours. The evidence pointed to a successful deflation (started on May 4).

The story that begins in the second half of May has occupied the collective thoughts of the country ever since: a persistent increase in the number of cases, which in recent days has been over 400, and with an epicenter in the region of Lisbon and the Tagus Valley (average of 82.8% of cases in Portugal, in June and in July).

The evolution of the number of cases per week (which eliminates the ups and downs recorded in the various days, caused by factors such as the decrease in the number of tests performed at the weekend) shows how we are almost at the same point at the beginning of the deflation: in the week from 4 to 10 May, 2,299 cases were registered, according to official data from the Directorate-General for Health (DGS), in the last full week (29 June to 5 July) 2,251 were reported.
