“Is the Oculus Quest Worth the Hype? A Personal Review and Analysis”

Makes me think my Oculus Quest is collecting too much dust, which I was a bit afraid of beforehand. Very nice experience to let yourself, friends and family come into contact with. Think it’s also a great product for the price you paid for it at the time. Popular games such as Beat Saber, Superhot VR etc are fun and original to do. In addition, I also regularly boxed in VR during corona times and that was really good to keep your condition up.

But, the fun went away for me after a while. I think I had it regularly almost every week for the first year.

After that it became less and less and now a few times a year is a lot. I don’t like it longer than half an hour, because of the weight and the small screens, watching is too tiring for my eyes. I think it also has to do with resolution and refresh rate. In addition, you have the limitation of the hardware that you also see in most games. It’s all too much for me cartoon style I don’t like. I thought games like Star Wars were nicely done, so it’s possible. Finally, I also find the plastic of the Quest typically smelly, that smell has never gone away.

I see more in VR glasses that really only work wirelessly for the image and leave the generation of images to dedicated external hardware. Because it will take years before the graphic quality will resemble what current video cards can do. More realistic games that are on a PC/gaming computer level would attract me to buy a new generation of VR glasses. It is of course already possible via the OculusLink, etc., but it would actually be best if you had, so to speak, some game service that could stream this directly to your VR glasses without the intervention of your own computer.

I also spent some time developing myself for the glasses in combination with Unity, but I think that was about three years ago. That worked well in itself, but then found it quite a hassle to test, then had to build again and again and upload to the glasses. But I think there were also solutions to do it faster / test it so that you became more productive. But I eventually stopped because it is still quite a lot of work to build something on your own. Can imagine that the ecosystem has improved (even) in recent years and it might now work a bit better to make something for the Quest.
