Is the Mac mini a viable option for video editing? A critical review by Byline Network.

hello. Lee Jong-cheol’s picky review. Today, we will find out if the M2 Mac mini is good for video editing. I borrowed it from Apple. I’ve been using it for about 10 days. What about this product? This is the most expensive M2 Pro model among the M2 chipset-equipped products. That’s 1.79 million won. It’s actually not that expensive for a PC. It’s cheap – I can’t say this, but it’s one of the best value for money Macs out there.

Let’s look at performance first. I played both Final Cut and Premiere Pro. Final Cut is just flying around. They said that this can be edited very well up to 8K, but I don’t have equipment that can shoot 8K. So I made 8K by attaching four 4K. In fact, I named it 8K because I was forced to install it if it didn’t work. It’s not just 8K, it’s 8K 120Hz video. The video is only 2 minutes long, but the total video size is about 40GB. I divided it into 4 parts and returned it. The scrolling is, my God, very smooth. I tried printing this, but it ended without time to measure the printing time. I think it took less than 3 minutes.

I played the same video on M1 MacBook memory 16GB. The reason I didn’t compare it to the M1 Pro Mac Mini is simple. M1 Pro Mac Mini has the same media engine, memory bandwidth. Although there is a difference of about 20% in CPU performance, it was because there is a high possibility that the same result will be produced because a lot of work is done with the GPU. What was the result of the M1 MacBook? It works. A billion failures.

In the case of the M1 MacBook, if you look at it, the scrolling is a bit stiff, but it’s not so bad that you can’t use it. Even in the case of output, it was less than 5 minutes. It doesn’t make a big difference.

Now, it’s not the same, but I made a 3-part 8K video in Premiere to run it on the desktop. 4K somehow failed to make it. I used the resolution at 8K 120Hz, but the output was good for about 8 minutes. However, it is definitely very stiff when scrolling. When I was working on it, it was fine, but somehow it is inconvenient because it has less precise control. This computer is an i7/RTX3050 PC that costs about 2.2 million won. It’s slightly more expensive than the M2 Pro Mac Mini.

Now, this file has no motion at all. So I took a look at the premiere project that I published two weeks ago. It was a 4K 120Hz video. long It’s over 20 minutes. And subtitles, motion, etc. are all applied. For reference, our PD used a Ryzen 5 and a GTX1060 4 years ago, and the PC stood up when printing. So he had no choice but to remove some motion and pull it out. Let’s go back.

If you look at it, it started at 12:22. The expected printing time is less than 5 minutes. Then it gradually decreased and ended at 12:26. I hung up in the 3rd minute after less than 4 minutes. However, our PD’s PC went haywire.

Run the same project on the M1 MacBook. It started at 7:20. The estimated time was 17 minutes at first, then gradually decreased. So it ended at 7:26. I heard about 6 minutes. A laptop can do this too. It’s not even two, but there’s a difference of about 40%. It was just about the same as the keynote presentation.

I ran it in the same project window. 8 minutes out. So, the order was M2 Pro Mac Mini > M1 MacBook > Windows Desktop, but my PC was picked out anyway.

Run 3D Blender once. I’m trying to render a 3D file that can be used like a real game. The M1 MacBook came out in about 24 minutes. The desktop came out in about 28 minutes, the only M2 Pro Mac Mini finished in under 10 minutes.

After looking at the results of the experiment, we came to an unexpected conclusion. You can still use the M1 MacBook. Well, it’s all right.

However, the price may be slightly different. The Mac mini is one of the few Apple budget products. The starting price is 850,000 won. I thought Apple’s watch was the only product under 1 million won, but it wasn’t. But if you’re going to buy a Mac mini, I’d recommend the M2 Pro. Take a good look at the specifications.

The basic model of the M2 Mac mini is 850,000 won, but it is less than 8GB. Apple silicon products are memory suckers. You should go for 16GB. If you choose 16GB, it will be 1.12 million won, right? Storage device, 256 is not enough for video, right? When I bought the M1 MacBook, the worst thing I did was to choose the 256. So if you press 512, you get 1.39 million won, right? You don’t need anything else. However, the M2 Pro, which already has 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, costs 1.79 million won. However, the GPU is very different. 10 core and 16 core. Also, there are two Thunderbolts on the M2 Mini, but four on the M2 Pro Mini. Of course, there are two more USBs, but Thunderbolt is much faster. Everyone, think about it. Two ports always lack one. Thinking of this scientifically, I put only two. That means an additional $400,000. However, if you are not sensitive to ports, we also recommend a product for 1.39 million won. If you have 1.79 million won, it is good to invest.

Now, I thought a lot while writing this, but do I really need a Mac mini? I’ve been thinking like this. First of all, it is more inconvenient than the MacBook. You’ll need a keyboard and mouse. So it’s not comparable to the MacBook, but if the price matches the same specifications, it will be 2.79 million won. Maybe it’s because the MacBook Pro is a bit of a high-end device, and the Mac mini is in the low-end segment, but even though the same parts are used, there is a big difference. This is enough to buy a keyboard mouse and a good LG monitor for about 600,000 won. there is an accident

The iMac is difficult to compare. In fact, the iMac is prettier. There are few lines. It’s better because it’s all-in-one and the keyboard and mouse are given, but what’s ambiguous about the iMac is that when the specifications start to deteriorate, it’s ambiguous that you have to change it to a barrel. And I can’t carry it.

But I took this to work for a week. I can take it with me if I need to, and I can use it if I am in a hurry. These are my strengths. Of course, people are surprised when I just take this out, but I want to work at home or at work with good performance anyway. When I thought this, there was only one alternative to MacBook. If the company has a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, all you have to do is bring the main body. It was better than expected.

The most important thing is the price, but the MacBook is definitely good for work. That’s why you buy a lot of MacBook Airs for entry-level use. It’s very appropriate, but air comes to its limit at some point when you increase the specifications. There are few such parts-I want to say this. It’s the best Mac in terms of value for money and entry-level – so we conclude.

So, do you want to buy this product or not?

I have the M1 product. don’t buy It doesn’t make much of a difference.

I have to go to Starbucks. don’t buy If you bring a monitor with you, it will be stuffed into Internet memes.

I can’t pick up 4K 120Hz video. buy. please.

Now, next time, we will bring a good product for beginners. So until then, subscribe, like, and turn on notifications.
