Because of Corona Virus: Will the Ice Hockey World Cup be Relocated Abroad?

Due to the corona virus, there is currently a ban in Switzerland for events with more than 1000 people. If this remains the case after March 15th, the World Hockey Championship could not take place in Zurich and Lausanne.

The ice hockey world championship is to be held in Switzerland at the beginning of May – in theory. Due to the corona virus, it is currently not possible to play with the public in the Swiss stadiums.

A world cup without fans? René Fasel thinks it’s impossible. “La Regione” quotes the President of IIHF from a report by the Russian agency “Tass”: “We will certainly not play in empty stadiums.”

Two other options are possible

There are even concrete ideas as to where the World Cup could be relocated: “We are currently considering Sochi and Belarus as possible options,” said Fasel.

The IIHF will only decide after March 15 whether the World Cup will actually be moved to Zurich and Lausanne. Until then, the Federal Council’s ban on events will now take effect. (dab)
