The stellar debut of Ricardo Pepi – 18-year-old Mexican-American forward – with the United States National Team and the low level of Rogelio Funes Mori with the Mexican National Team have reopened the debate about whether Mexico is concerned about the lack of goal in young forwards.
José Juan Macías faces a stage of adaptation in Getafe and aims to be a substitute this season in LaLiga after standing out with León and, to a lesser extent, with Chivas in Liga MX; The same goes for Santiago Muñoz, who will play for Newcastle’s Under-23s after his arrival in England this summer. Santiago Giménez appears to be the only fit young Mexican center-forward in Liga MX, so it seems that Tata Martino and his coaching staff will have to look to the Expansion League, where Aztec scorers abound.
If we turn to see the scorers table of the current tournament, we find that of the 82 players who have scored at least one goal in the current Grita México A21 of the Expansion League, only 10 of them are foreigners. In addition, of the 10 best scorers in the tournament after seven disputed dates, 9 of them are Mexican, although none are from the Under-23 category. We must go back to 14th place where midfielder José Plascencia (22 years old) from Mineros de Zacatecas bursts in, tied with various other players in the tournament with two scores.
If we extend the focus to goal participations (goal, assistance or previous pass), the Mexicans continue to stand out and the midfielder Luis Hernández (23 years old) appears in 5th place, the companion of Plascencia in the core of Mineros, with 4 goal participations in the pageant.
It is also surprising that of Juan Martín Rodríguez, Dorados’ left back, who at 22 also adds 4 goal participations, demonstrating his offensive vocation and talent.
Also noteworthy is the right winger Paolo Yrizar (24 years old, Dorados), who is doing a consecrating season with 4 goal participations at the moment. In 2019 he was part of the Mexican National Team in lower categories, but he was certainly stuck in the MX League with Tijuana, where he barely played 4 games and did not produce goals or assists.

Returning to the scoring table, at the top appear Martín Barragán (30 years old, Morelia) and Víctor Mañón (29 years old, Tepatitlán) with 5 annotations each. They are followed by Paolo Yrizar (24 years old, Dorados) and Omar Islas (25 years old, Pumas Tabasco) with 4 and, then, Rafael Durán (24 years old, Miners) and Armando Escobar (28 years old, Atlante) with three annotations, a figure where The only foreigner also breaks into the top scorers in the Expansion League in this Apertura 2021: José Zúñiga, a 27-year-old Colombian who plays in Dorados.
The Top-10 of directors is closed by Adrián Marín (27 years old, Dorados), Alfonso Tamay (28 years old, Atlante) and Raúl Suárez (Venados), being the elements that have reached 2 goals with fewer minutes played in the contest.
Interestingly, the youngest Mexican scorer in A21 does not play as a forward. This is Diego Campillo, a 19-year-old central defender who has great potential and plays in Tapatío. Curious, too, is the case of Jaziel Martínez, a 20-year-old midfielder from Raya2 who adds two scores despite his defensive and associative vocation on the pitch.
